Language Institute Tutors at the Georgia Tech Communication Center: One-on-One Help
An important part of the Language Institute's mission is to help both graduate and undergraduate students who are non-native speakers of English to develop academic fluency that will enable them to be successful at Georgia Tech. As part of our support of these students, we provide experienced lecturers to serve as tutors at the Georgia Tech Communication Center in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons.
If you need help with a project, our lecturers can help you. Our lecturers will not edit or proofread your work; however, they will help YOU develop the ability to edit your own work. With our tutors, you will find a comfortable space to get feedback, ask questions, and discuss writing and speaking tasks that you are having trouble with.
At the beginning of each session, our tutors will find out more information about the assignment/task. They will ask you about the instructions and professor expectations for an assignment and areas you would like help with. Remember that the tutor is not there to evaluate your work; rather, the tutor will give you constructive feedback and make suggestions on how to clarify points and organize information more effectively.
Once the global issues are under control, the tutor will help you identify ways to make your writing or speaking more accurate in terms of grammar, word choice, and/or pronunciation. It is important to remember that the tutor's job is to help YOU become a more effective writer or oral communicator in English; their job is not just to fix a particular paper or speaking task.
