Georgia Tech Evening Programs for ESL and Foreign Languages

Would you like to enhance your language skills for personal or professional development?

The Language Institute and the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech will begin offering evening classes in English as a Second Language, Spanish, and Chinese in Fall 2016. Classes in the GT Evening Program offer a communicative, learner-centered approach and emphasize authentic language use. 

Our classes will meet in the Biltmore Building, which is conveniently located on the Georgia Tech campus near the Midtown MARTA station in Midtown Atlanta. Our six-week classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, with courses starting in August, October, and March.

Please note that individual courses may be canceled due to low enrollment. The Language Institute will notify applicants immediately by email if a course is canceled.

Course Descriptions

 

Developing the Art of Conversation in English
In this course, students will improve their communication skills for everyday life. They will practice common words and expressions used in personal conversations and also improve pronunciation skills to help listeners understand their message. Students will participate in role-plays to develop both their abilities and confidence in everyday conversational situations.

 

Professional Writing
In this course, students will compose and practice various types of professional writing such as emails, business letters, resumes, and blogs. Students will also learn and use vocabulary and grammar forms that are essential for maintaining appropriate formality within a professional setting.

 

Improving Writing through Blogging
In this blogging course, students will improve their writing through writing a series of blogs. They will communicate their ideas views in English as they build a blog based on a topic of their choice. In addition to developing a theme, students will learn basic blogging skills such as linking to resources, uploading photos, and selecting colors and images for the overall blog design. Through blogging, students will improve their writing and practice using common expressions and grammatical structures.

 

Public Speaking in English for Professionals
In this course, students will learn how to give effective presentations to American audiences. They will give different types of short presentations and develop their understanding of how both the body and the voice are used in effective oral presentations.

 

Chinese 1
In this class, students will learn a wide variety of vocabulary and expressions that will enable them to manage basic communicative interactions in Chinese such as introducing themselves, expressing likes and dislikes, giving and following directions, and ordering a meal in a restaurant. The focus is mainly on speaking and listening basic conversational Chinese. Students will also learn a few basic characters and s basic sentence structures.

 

Spanish 1
In this class, students will learn a wide variety of vocabulary and expressions that will enable them to manage basic communicative interactions in Spanish such as introducing themselves, expressing likes and dislikes, giving and following directions, and ordering a meal in a restaurant. Students will practice the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

 

Chinese 2
In this class, students will continue the curriculum of Chinese 1. They will continue to learn a wide variety of vocabulary and expressions that will enable them to manage basic communicative interactions in Chinese. The focus is mainly on speaking and listening basic conversational Chinese. Students will also learn more basic characters and sentence structures.

 

Spanish 2
Spanish 2 will continue the curriculum from Spanish 1. Students will continue to learn how to communicate in various situations, including talking and writing about jobs, housing, travel, and cooking. Students will work on the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
