Application Requirements

I am outside the U.S. and need an I-20 to get an F-1 student visa 

As a part of your application, you will need: 

  • A copy of your valid passport 

  • A bank statement showing a minimum of $6,800 in the past two months. The bank document may be no more than three months old and must clearly indicate the name on the account as well as the account balance. 

  • A letter of financial sponsorship if the bank statement is not in your name. 

  • A medical entrance form if you are 17 years old at the time you will be starting classes. 

  • A completed application 

  • A $150 non-refundable application fee payment 

I currently have an F-1 student visa and I need to transfer my SEVIS record from another U.S. program 

As a part of your application, you will need: 

  • A copy of your valid passport 

  • A copy of your valid F-1 visa 

  • A copy of your most recent I-94 

  • A bank statement showing a minimum of $6,800 in the past two months. The bank document may be no more than three months old and must clearly indicate the name on the account as well as the account balance. 

  • A letter of financial sponsorship if the bank statement is not in your name. 

  • A medical entrance form if you are 17 years old at the time you will be starting classes. 

  • A transfer verification form from your current school 

  • A completed application 

  • A $150 non-refundable application fee payment 

I currently have a U.S. visa other than an F-1 student visa 

As a part of your application, you will need: 

  • A copy of your valid passport 

  • A copy of your valid United States visa or supporting paperwork 

  • A completed application 

  • A $100 non-refundable application fee payment 

I am a U.S. citizen or permanent resident 

As a part of your application, you will need: 

  • A copy of your valid U.S. passport or permanent resident card 

  • A completed application 

  • A $100 non-refundable application fee payment 

Application F.A.Q.s

Immigration and F-1 visa information 
    • I-20s and acceptance letters are issued within 5-10 business days after successful completion of the placement test.  

    • The Language Institute cannot expedite the issuance of or make special notes/requests on an I-20. 

    • All F-1 applicants are responsible for paying the I-901 SEVIS processing fee and scheduling an appointment for their visa.  

    • It is the F-1 applicant’s responsibility to inform the Language Institute of visa approvals/denials.  

    • An F-1 student who enters the country and immediately requests a transfer to another institution without attending the Language Institute by the date indicated on their I-20 will be subject to a $500 non-refundable transfer without attending fee. 

    • Applicants changing their status to F-1 may not attend school until the change to F-1 has been approved.  

    • It is the applicant’s responsibility to read and understand all USCIS rules and regulations regarding I-20s and F-1 visas. 

Enrollment deferral and application cancellation 
    • If you are unable to attend the session that you originally applied for and would like to (a.) defer your enrollment to a later session or (b.) cancel your application, please fill out our change of plans form.  

    • F-1 applicants must defer their enrollment no later than 50 days after their original program start date. Requests made after the 50 days will result in a new I-20 with a new SEVIS ID.  

    • All documents must be valid and up to date at the time a deferral is requested. The Language Institute may require updated documents from you in order to defer your application.
